{"id":173,"date":"2020-05-22T21:48:03","date_gmt":"2020-05-22T20:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calm-hypnotherapy.co.uk\/?post_type=product&#038;p=173"},"modified":"2025-06-06T05:27:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T04:27:55","slug":"fears-phobias","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/calm-hypnotherapy.co.uk\/index.php\/product\/fears-phobias\/","title":{"rendered":"Fears &#038; Phobias"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><strong>What is a fear or phobia?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>A phobia is an irrational fear, a fear without good reason.\u00a0 \u00a0 People with phobias experience unwanted responses to things that other people might not be concerned about.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of fears or phobias may, or may not, be known by the person.\u00a0 There may have been an initial &#8220;trigger event&#8221; to something that may have startled or unsettled the person.\u00a0 \u00a0This might have triggered a physical response, known as a &#8220;stress response&#8221; for the person.\u00a0 Their subconscious mind might have had to make the decision for &#8220;fight&#8221; or &#8220;flight&#8221; to protect them.\u00a0 Because this response worked in those circumstances, their subconscious mind might have transferred this response to other similar feelings.<\/p>\n<p>People often describe their reaction to something as \u2018having butterflies in my stomach\u2019, being \u2018paralysed with fear\u2019 or \u2018just wanting to run away\u2019 from whatever is triggering the response.\u00a0 Those with phobias often know that their response is irrational, making it harder to understand or accept.\u00a0 People often manage their phobia on a day-to-day basis by avoiding the trigger.\u00a0 \u00a0They may contact a hypnotherapist when it becomes a serious problem or significantly impacts on their life.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Can hypnotherapy help with fears or phobias?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Hypnotherapy has considerable success in addressing fears and phobias.\u00a0\u00a0We can work together using a range of different therapeutic tools to help you understand and resolve your fear or phobia, no matter what it is.\u00a0 De-sensitisation or time line therapy can help break the link between the initial stress response and the development of the fear or phobia.<\/p>\n<p>Book in now for a free consultation to discuss how I can help you.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>What are some examples of fears or phobias?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Some common examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of dogs <\/strong>is called <strong>cynophobia<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0 A person with this phobia experiences a fear of dogs that is both irrational and persistent.\u00a0 \u00a0 It iss more than just feeling uncomfortable with barking or being around dogs.\u00a0 It may mean that the person is unable to go to parks or areas where dogs may be, especially if there is a chance that a dog may not be on a lead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of cats<\/strong> is called <strong>ailurophobia<\/strong> or <strong>felinophobia<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is an intense fear of cats that&#8217;s strong enough to cause panic and anxiety when around or thinking about cats.\u00a0 \u00a0If you&#8217;ve ever been bitten or scratched by a cat, you might feel nervous around them, but this phobia is usually about more than that.\u00a0 It is different to being allergic to cats which may be to do with their fur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of flying<\/strong> is called <strong>aerophobia<\/strong> and is about an excessive worry about air travel.\u00a0 \u00a0Some people fear that they will lose control of their emotions during flight and therefore embarrass themselves in front of fellow passengers.\u00a0 \u00a0For others, the fear is associated with external factors such as turbulence, bad weather or a fault with the airplane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of heights<\/strong> is called <strong>acrophobia<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0Most people experience a degree of natural fear when exposed to heights, known as the\u00a0fear of falling.\u00a0\u00a0A person who has a fear or phobia of heights could have an attack just walking up steps or climbing a ladder.\u00a0 Sometimes the\u00a0fear\u00a0is so great a person can&#8217;t move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vertigo <\/strong>is often used (incorrectly) to describe a fear of heights, but it is more accurately a spinning sensation that occurs when one is not actually spinning. It can be triggered by looking down from a high place, by looking straight up at a high place or tall object, or even by watching something (i.e. a car or a bird) go past at high speed, but this alone does not describe vertigo. True vertigo can be triggered by almost any type of movement (e.g. standing up, sitting down, walking) or change in visual perspective (e.g. squatting down, walking up or down stairs, looking out of the window of a moving car or train). Vertigo is called\u00a0height vertigo\u00a0when the sensation of vertigo is triggered by heights.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Hypnotherapy can used to treat vertigo as well as fear of heights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of needles<\/strong> is called <strong>trypanophobia<\/strong>. It\u00a0is an extreme\u00a0fear\u00a0of medical procedures involving hypodermic\u00a0needles or injections.\u00a0 This has been especially problematic for people who want to be vaccinated against <strong>covid-19<\/strong> but feel unable to have the injection because of their fear of needles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of medical or dental treatment<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>tomophobia<\/strong> is the fear of surgical procedures or medical intervention, and <strong>iatrophobia<\/strong> is the fear of doctors.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>Dentophobia<\/strong> (or <strong>odontophobia<\/strong>) is the fear of dentists or dental treatment.\u00a0 \u00a0One of the major impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic has been the spotlight placed on our health.\u00a0 \u00a0People have also been concerned about going to hospital for non-covid-19 reasons such as health screening and essential medical investigation due to other health concerns.\u00a0 Some people were already phobic about intimate medical investigations such as cervical smears, mammograms, colonoscopies, cystoscopies, MRI scans and blood or urine tests.\u00a0\u00a0 Others are worried about going to the dentist for routine check-ups, fillings or other work.\u00a0 They may leave it until their mouth is infected and the work is more difficult to do and will take longer to heal. The good news is that hypnotherapy has helped many people to successfully have their medical and dental treatment in a timely manner without the worry or anxiety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of buttons<\/strong> is called\u00a0 <strong>koumpounophobia.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><\/strong> It can be a dislike or hate that is generated against buttons that might be present in clothes or gadgets or even in pictures. This phobia regularly leads to feelings of fear and disgust when sufferers are exposed to buttons either visually or physically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of bridges<\/strong> is called <strong>gephyrophobia<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0When a person who suffers from this phobia comes to a bridge they have to cross in a car or by walking, they experience an intense fear.\u00a0 For some people, the mere thought or anticipation of it brings on a panic attack.\u00a0 Some people with this phobia go to significant lengths to choose a route which avoids bridges, sometimes lengthening their journey by hours or even days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of clowns<\/strong> is called <strong>coulrophobia<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0Fear of <strong>masked characters<\/strong> is called <strong>masklophobia<\/strong> or maskaphobia.\u00a0 These phobias describe people who have an irrational fear of clowns or people in masks, or who are dressed in costumed clothing and mascots.\u00a0 \u00a0This can include well-known figures such as santa claus (<span><strong>santaphobia<\/strong>).\u00a0 <\/span>They may feel shaken or traumatised at meeting someone dressed in that way, or even a picture or the thought of them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of spiders<\/strong> is called <strong>arachnophobia<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>Entomophobia<\/strong> is an extreme and persistent\u00a0<strong>fear of insects<\/strong>. People who have this phobia may not want to touch a spider or insects, or even look at a picture of them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of water<\/strong> is called <strong>aquaphobia.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><strong><\/strong>People who have this phobia live with a persistent and abnormal amount of fear and anxiety that may prevent them from even getting close to water.\u00a0 Some people do not even like to drink water.\u00a0 Others have a fear of open water (<span><strong>thalassophobia<\/strong>) which involves a persistent and intense\u00a0fear\u00a0of deep bodies of\u00a0water\u00a0such as the\u00a0ocean\u00a0or\u00a0sea.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fear of confined spaces<\/strong> is called <strong>claustrophobia<\/strong>.
